¹⁶ As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,^(A) and he saw the Spirit of God^(B) descending like a dove and alighting on him.

⁹ “Do not oppress a foreigner;^(A) you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.

¹⁹ He has sacrificed^(A) great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king’s sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant.

¹⁹ Do you not know that your bodies are temples^(A) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;^(B)

² You desire but do not have, so you kill.^(A) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

⁸ Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.

²³ And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”^[a](A) and he was called God’s friend.^(B)
